Protect your gum health and preserve your smile

The health of your gums is essential to your overall oral wellbeing. Gums act as the foundation to your smile, providing crucial support and protection to your teeth. When gum tissue becomes under attack from the bacteria present in tartar and plaque, it can progress to gum disease. This is easy to treat in the early stages, but can develop into periodontitis if left untreated, a more serious condition. Periodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with maintaining the health of gums and the supporting tissues. It includes treating gum disease and performing gum treatments.

What is gum disease?

Plaque deposits can build up on the teeth due to food debris attracting bacteria. Most of this plaque is removed with regular brushing, but it can accumulate in hard to reach areas, particularly where your teeth meet the gums. This causes inflammation, resulting in gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease.

How can gum disease be treated?

Most cases of mild gum disease can be treated with regular visits to the hygienist, who will give your teeth and gums a deep clean to boost their health and condition. The hygienist also thoroughly assesses your teeth and gums at each appointment, treating signs of gum disease before it becomes too serious. This, combined with an excellent oral hygiene routine at home, can be extremely effective at keeping gum disease at bay.

Periodontists are specialised dentists who have completed additional years of training. They are best suited to help people with aggressive periodontitis, keeping on top of the condition and preventing it from causing further damage.
